Bengaluru, June 29: As monsoon rains weaken across Karnataka, farmers in the Cauvery basin are once again gripped by drought anxiety. Even in Silicon City Bengaluru, residents are struggling to secure basic drinking water. In this dire situation, Assembly Opposition Leader R. Ashoka has levelled serious allegations that the ruling Congress government is committing a grave betrayal of Kannadigas by secretly releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. He charged that, under the pretext of drinking water needs, the government has been releasing 2,000 cusecs of water daily from the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagara) reservoir — the lifeline of the Cauvery basin — to Tamil Nadu for the past three days.
Venting his anger through social media platform X, R. Ashoka wrote: "This is the entire history of the Congress party. When out of power, they put on a theatrical show chanting 'our water, our right.' But the moment they come to power, they surrender saying 'our water is Tamil Nadu's right.' Merely for political alliances and the lure of power — allied with DMK then, TVK now — they keep doing injustice to Kannadigas time and again. Without protecting the interests of the people of this land, they sacrifice Kannada interests on the orders of the Delhi high command."
Directly questioning Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ashoka said: "Before the elections, you staged the street drama of a padayatra in the name of Mekedatu for political gain. Now, what march will you do? If Cauvery basin farmers take their own lives due to lack of water and crops, will you join their funeral processions? Or if the people of Bengaluru are exploited by the tanker mafia and left to fend for themselves, will you do a tanker march?"
Ashoka warned that the people of Karnataka will teach this Congress government a fitting lesson in the coming days for its failure to provide even basic water security and rights to the people of the state.
