A young woman from Bengaluru was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a homestay near Muddanahalli, within the jurisdiction of Nandigiri Dhama Police Station in Chikkaballapur district. The deceased has been identified as Sai Surabhi. Her alleged boyfriend, Sanjit Ali — a cab driver from Kozhikode, Kerala — was found unconscious at the scene and has been admitted to hospital.
In the wake of her daughter's death, Surabhi's mother Geeta broke down before the media and levelled a serious allegation, claiming this was a case of love jihad and murder.
Sai Surabhi and Sanjit Ali had checked into the homestay near Muddanahalli last Saturday. On Monday, when checkout time passed and the room remained unopened, the homestay caretaker went to check and the incident came to light. Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chauksi and police personnel visited the scene and conducted an inspection.
Surabhi's body was found hanging, with the rope that had been used cut. Several tablets were also found at the scene, raising strong suspicion of poison ingestion. A diary was recovered from the room containing several written notes, which police are currently examining.
SP Kushal Chauksi said that whether this is a murder or a joint suicide will become clear only after Sanjit Ali — currently hospitalised and seriously ill — regains consciousness. A case has been registered at Nandigiri Dhama Police Station.
Sai Surabhi had first met Sanjit Ali through mutual friends when she was studying at Dayananda Sagar College in Bengaluru. As their acquaintance grew, Ali claimed to love her and began harassing her. In an effort to remove her from the situation, the family enrolled her in a college elsewhere, but Ali tracked her down and continued to torment her.
"He completely brainwashed my daughter, and on top of that he made her drug-dependent. I struggled and got her treated at two or three facilities and brought her back to health. Recently she was doing very well and was in good shape," said her mother Geeta, in tears.
Surabhi had recently taken up a job as a physiotherapist in Muddanahalli. On Saturday she told her mother she was attending a satsang (spiritual gathering) there and would stay. But Sanjit Ali had tracked her down once again, manipulated her, and taken her to the homestay.
"He conspired and murdered my daughter. The accused must be given the strictest punishment," said Geeta, expressing her anguish.
The family's uncle Shankaranarayana told Public TV that they had filed complaints against Sanjit Ali but police had not taken any action. "If police had acted against him, Surabhi would still be alive," he said.
Last year, Surabhi had gone missing without returning home, and a missing person case had been filed at Banashankari Police Station in Bengaluru. Police had later traced her to a friend's house and handed her back to her family.
