Bengaluru, August 3: Online investment fraud cases are rising faster than any other category of cyber crime in Bengaluru. According to Cyber Crime police reports, investment fraud — in which criminals cheat the public of crores of rupees — now tops the list, surpassing even digital arrest scams and other forms of cyber crime.
Scammers primarily contact potential victims through WhatsApp, Telegram, and other social media platforms. They begin by offering small tasks — part-time jobs, online assignments, or product and service reviews — and pay out commissions promptly to earn the victim's trust.
Once trust is established, they lure the victim with promises of maximum daily returns through fake trading apps or cryptocurrency investment schemes. To make the scheme appear legitimate, they deliver quick "profits" on initial small investments of a few thousand rupees.
However, once the victim has invested lakhs of rupees and attempts to withdraw their funds, the fraudsters demand further payments under the pretext of various fees, taxes, or charges — and then ultimately go silent and sever all contact.
The Bengaluru City Cyber Crime Branch (CCB) has uncovered several such fraud networks and seized hundreds of fake bank accounts used to funnel investment fraud proceeds. Despite these efforts, police warn that cases continue to rise and are urging the public to stay alert.
