Bengaluru, May 2: In a heartbreaking incident under the Hennur Traffic Police jurisdiction, a young boy who had stepped out to fetch medicine for his ailing father died tragically after collapsing on the road and being run over by a private bus. The boy, Varun (16), had recently passed his SSLC (Class 10) examinations with high marks.
Friday morning, as Varun stepped out to fetch medicine for his sick father, he stopped at a barricade on the busy Hennur-Bagaluru road to cross. Without warning, he became dizzy and fell backward. At that very moment, a private bus coming down the road ran over him — its rear wheel crushing his chest. He died on the spot. The harrowing incident was captured in full on CCTV footage.
Investigators suspect the intense heat may have caused a heat stroke, making the boy lose consciousness and collapse.
The boy's parents have expressed intense anger, blaming ongoing road construction for the tragedy. White-topping work has been underway on the Hennur-Bagaluru main road for several months, creating severe chaos for local residents. Due to the construction, traffic travelling in both directions is forced to share a single lane, making it extremely difficult and dangerous for pedestrians to cross. Just a few days prior, a delivery boy had also been killed in an accident at the same stretch.
"We lost our son because of this white-topping work," the grieving mother said.
The Hennur Traffic Police have registered a case and arrested the bus driver. While CCTV footage does not prima facie establish clear fault on the driver's part, an arrest was made as required by law given that a death occurred. Police are investigating all dimensions of the case — including whether the boy had an underlying health condition, or whether the extreme heat caused a heat stroke that made him collapse.
