Bengaluru, May 2: A 23-year-old housewife named Vandana was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence near the Old Post Office in Hulimavu, Bengaluru, on Thursday evening. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Hulimavu police station. The woman leaves behind a three-month-old infant.
Vandana, originally from Bettadasanapura, had married Vikram Shesha, a resident of Hulimavu, three years ago. According to her family, she had been subjected to relentless dowry harassment by her husband and his family from the very beginning of the marriage. Police had previously attempted mediation between the two families, but the harassment reportedly never stopped, and allegations have surfaced that no strict action was taken at the time.
On Thursday evening, Vandana's body was found in a hanging position at the family home. Her relatives have seriously alleged that the husband and his in-laws are responsible for her death — not a suicide. They pointed to the fact that a saree was found entangled in the ceiling fan blades, arguing it would have been physically impossible for her to hang herself in that condition. "Our daughter was brave and not the kind of person to take her own life. This is murder," the family stated.
The family also revealed that at the time of the wedding, they had given a motorcycle, gold ornaments, and spent ₹4 lakh on the ceremony — yet the husband's family continued to demand more dowry afterward. A formal complaint has been filed against Vandana's husband and his family members at Hulimavu police station.
The last rites were conducted at Bettadasanapura amid scenes of deep grief. Villagers including Narayanswamy and Chamaraju have demanded severe punishment for those responsible. Hulimavu police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
